Two-time Wimbledon tennis champion Petra Kvitová was attacked in her apartment by a home invader with a knife, the athlete said today. Her left hand, which she used to defend herself, was badly injured.
The man entered her apartment this morning by pretending to be a utility worker needing to check a meter, The New York Times reported. He then attacked her in the bathroom, putting a knife against Kvitová’s throat. She escaped from his grasp using her left hand against the blade of the knife, resulting in deep cuts into four fingers.
Kvitová uses her left hand to play tennis and has a two-handed backhand, making this injury potentially disastrous to her livelihood. She underwent surgery today to repair as much of her hand as possible, the Times reported.
Her attacker, who police say is a man in his mid-30s, is still at large.
