Woman Allegedly Stabbed 81-Year-Old Grandfather To Death Because Of 'American Horror Story'

He apparently bled to death while Dwyer did dishes.

An Australian woman is on trial for murder for allegedly stabbing her grandfather to death after being inspired by the television series “American Horror Story.”

According to Inside Edition, Brittney Jade Dwyer was 19 when prosecutors claim she and her girlfriend drove across the country to rob 81-year-old Robert Whitwell.

"The motivation is obviously robbery of money from Mr. Whitwell but it seems to be, to a certain extent, motivated by a TV program called 'American Horror Story,'” Dwyer’s lawyer Craig Caldicott told a judge on Wednesday as he described his client’s mental health and drug usage. He claims Dwyer, now 20, suffers from borderline personality disorder. Caldicott told the court she abused alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy.

“The amount of drugs she was talking about taking is a near impossibility,” he said. “She talked about smoking an ounce (or 28g) of cannabis a day. Even hardened cannabis users would normally smoke an ounce in a week.”

Caldicott also blamed the young woman’s “troubled upbringing.”

According to Adelaide Now, the presiding judge didn’t buy it.  Judge Nicholson challenged that notion, stating that Dwyer had a “pretty good upbringing”.

“She leaves school and goes crazy in terms of her lifestyle. There are no mitigating factors except for her extreme youth,” he said. “I have to consider whether (Dwyer) is a very dangerous person, who at 18 has gone from zero to premeditated murder,” he said.

Dwyer and her girlfriend, Bernadette Burns {pictured below}, traveled to Whitwell's home in August to allegedly attack him.

Burns stayed in the car while Dwyer visited her grandfather. While inside the home, Dwyer had a fleeting change of heart.

“The accused then sent a text message to Ms. Burns saying she could not go through with the plan,” court documents state. Burns allegedly encouraged Dwyer to go through with it. Dwyer allegedly stabbed Whitwell in the neck and chest. He bled to death while Dwyer did dishes, police alleged. The young couple had planned to rob Whitwell of about $90,000 USD they thought he hid in a shed. But, they only found and stole $1,000 and some electronics.

The pair will be sentenced next month.
