A Tulsa, Oklahoma woman was sentenced to 16 years in prison Thursday for mutilating the corpse of her love rival during a funeral home viewing in 2015.
According to Tulsa World, Shaynna Lauren Sims, 28, cut off the breasts and a toe from the body of 38-year-old Tabatha Lynch while the body was in a casket. According to NBC affiliate KFOR, Sims also slashed Lynch’s face with a pocket knife, cut her hair, and smudged her makeup. She mutilated the corpse right before a scheduled funeral.
Sims will serve 7 years for first-degree burglary, 5 years for unlawfully removing a body part from a deceased person, 2 years for unknowingly concealing stolen property, and one year each for unauthorized dissection and disrupting or interrupting a funeral. The judge, who granted the state's request to have the sentences served consecutively, also ruled Sims must pay fines totalling $6,500.
During the trial, Sims was described as a “scorned wife” who was “so eaten up” over claims Lynch had a relationship with her now-estranged husband, that she wanted revenge even after she died. According to the report, Lynch died of natural causes.
Sims’ lawyer had claimed that Sims was “not in the right state of mind” because she was humiliated, broken-hearted and angered by the cheating revelations.
