Woman Says Government Hackers Took Over Her Facebook

Her profile name was suddenly changed to "Egyptian Government Hacker"

A woman in Minneapolis says that her Facebook account was taken over by government hackers. Jessica Jacobsen noticed she was locked out of her account a month ago and her profile was being changed. "They changed my name to all Arabic. They started deleting most of my memories," she shared with KARE 11.

Jacobsen says that her profile name was changed to what translates into "Egyptian Government Hacker." She says the page had over 17,000 members who were posting about activities like taking over Facebook accounts and buying and selling U.S. passports. "I became alarmed when I saw posts talking about selling and buying Facebook accounts, buying and selling U.S. passports, specifically about American accounts, and selling people's whole identities," she said.

She says that she tried to delete the page several times but Facebook wouldn't do it. Eventually, she called the FBI as well as the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies.

When KARE 11 reached out, Facebook did confirm that the page was removed.  “I looked into the group that you flagged and can confirm that it does violate our Community Standards,” said Facebook’s Ruchika Budhraja via email. “Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I am still in the process of investigating whether there were earlier reports filed against the group. For now, however, I can confirm that the group has been removed from Facebook.“
