An Iowa woman accused or leaving her newborn in a hospital trash can has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

Last year, 24-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader gave birth in a University of Iowa Hospital bathroom. She then put her newborn in a pillowcase and left it in a trash can. It was later found alive by hospital staff.

Hautzenrader, 24, avoided attempted murder charges by pleading guilty to two lesser charges of child endangerment and neglect or abandonment of a dependent person on Friday.

She faces up to 12 years in prison, according to WHO-TV. The attempted murder charge could have resulted in up to 25 years in prison.

Police said at that Hautzenrader thought the newborn was dead so she tried to flush it down a toilet, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen. When that didn’t work, she left it in a pillowcase in the trash can.

Hautzenrader also told police that she "didn’t know she was pregnant."
