The missing limbs of a Brockton, Massachusetts man who was allegedly murdered by his girlfriend were found by his family when they went to collect his belongings on Monday. According to the Boston Herald, 44-year-old Joseph Shaw was stabbed more than 30 times before he was dismembered.
Many family members did not even know of the victim’s mutilation until the girlfriend, Kathryn Podgurski, 33, was arraigned in court for murder on Monday. The revelation prompted several relatives to run from the courthouse, sobbing in the middle of the arraignment, according to the Herald and NECN.
Soon after they found out how Shaw was killed, the family went to his apartment to gather his belongings. His niece Jacinda Shaw noticed a backpack with blood on its zipper.
“It was heavy, and when I opened it, his foot popped up,” she said. “We dumped it out on the bed, and there was another bag that we assume was his arm. ... We couldn’t figure out why the police didn’t find it. It was in plain sight.”
Police had found Shaw’s decomposing body beneath plastic bags and a wet comforter in his closet. The floor of the closet was covered in kitty litter, according to the Daily Mail. The litter was reportedly used to soak up the blood. His right arm and his left leg were found severed according to the Herald.
