Swimming Star Jamie Cail's Sudden Death In U.S. Virgin Islands Prompts Police Investigation

Jamie Cail was taken to a medical clinic on Feb. 21 after allegedly being found unresponsive by her boyfriend, according to authorities.

Former American swimming champion Jamie Cail was found dead at her home in the U.S. Virgin Islands, prompting a police investigation according to reports. 

On Feb. 21, police were dispatched to a St. John medical clinic at around 2:40 a.m. after a woman who was reported dead-on-arrival. Detectives learned that Cail’s boyfriend, who wasn’t identified, had left a local bar to check on her at around 12:08 a.m. He allegedly found Cail unresponsive after arriving at the residence that the couple share together. 

“With assistance from a friend, the male was able to get [Cail] to a nearby vehicle and transported [her] to the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic,” U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department said in a statement. “Once at the clinic, CPR was rendered and 911 was notified, however, the female succumbed to her ailment.”

The woman was later positively identified as Cail, 42. No information regarding preliminary autopsy results, including Cail’s cause and manner of death were released. Police, who stated that death was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Bureau, haven’t released additional information.

“She was just a very beautiful person,” one friend of Cail’s told WMUR-TV. “She had a huge heart. She was really loving and kind and well-loved and popular on the island and everybody knows her.”

Loved ones said Cail had worked at a local coffee shop prior to her death.

"Everyone from the you know, older generational, local families to the younger people, everybody loved her," her friend added.

Some former teammates of Cail’s also voiced their sorrow on social media after learning of her sudden death.

“Very sad to hear that my [high school] friend and teammate, Jamie Cail (in the middle with the Bolles suit), has passed away,” University of Toronto sociologist Jooyoung Lee wrote on Twitter. Jamie had an unmatched work ethic. She left everything in each practice and became a world class distance swimmer through grit. Rest in peace to a real one.”

Cail is originally from Claremont, New Hampshire, per Manchester television station WMUR-TV. In the mid-late 1990s, she emerged nationally a rising swim star who competed in contests around the world.

In 1997, Cail won a gold medal for the U.S. team at the Pan Pacific Championships in a relay race, according to swimming news site Swim Swam. She also clinched a silver medal at the 1998-1999 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Brazil, per Boston.com. She attended college prep Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida; the school was known for its robust swimming program.

The late New Hampshire swimmer also won numerous state swimming competitions in high school. As a teenager, she moved to Huntington, California to train with the Golden West Swim Club. She’s a former member of University of Maine’s 2000-2001 swim team. 

In 1998, Cail reportedly signed a letter of intent to swim at the University of Southern California and was a member of the University of Maine’s swim team during the 2000-2001 season.
