Horrific Family Tragedies When Parents Lost Control

According to the FBI, about 450 children are murdered by a parent each year.

An Army veteran confessed to murdering his mom and cutting off her head with a butter knife, a sheriff’s deputy testified Wednesday.

Sherry Johnson, a 51-year-old school guidance counselor, was found brutally murdered in the backyard of the Stone County, Mississippi home she shared with her son Terrelle Johnson, 29.

Stone County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ray Boggs testified at a preliminary hearing for Johnson. Boggs said that on June 6, he went to the home outside the town of Wiggins for a welfare check.

There, he found Sherry’s headless body in the backyard, with her head 15 feet away, the Sun Herald in Biloxi reported. Blood was all over the inside of the home.

"When I entered the bedroom, I immediately noticed blood everywhere,” Boggs said.

He said that a day later, Johnson confessed at a police station to killing his mother. The murder stemmed from an argument about credit cards, he said.

“[Johnson] told me that he beat her up real bad,” Boggs testified, according to the Sun Herald. “He said it got out of hand.”

After beating her up, Johnson choked his mom until she stopped breathing, Boggs said. Then he allegedly decapitated her with a butter knife, also using his hands and teeth to rip her head off. Johnson said he brought his mom’s body outside so that it didn’t stink up their home, Boggs said.

As Johnson walked into court Wednesday, he told a group of reporters, “I done it,” and said he is pleading guilty.

Johnson hasn’t officially entered any plea. He's charged with first-degree murder and is being held without any bond, WLOX in Biloxi reported. He reportedly worked temp jobs as an adult but didn’t hold a long-term job. When he was younger he served in the U.S. Army.
