A criminal justice teacher and part-time sheriff’s deputy from Waycross, Georgia is accused of not only having sex with a 16-year-old boy, but also of knowingly exposing that teenager to HIV.
After his arrest in late November, 42-year-old Tracy Wayne Crosby was suspended from his teaching job. He was also fired from his part-time gig at the Pierce County Sheriff’s department, where he worked as an investigator.
Jail records indicate that Crosby is being charged with reckless conduct for allegedly knowingly exposing someone to HIV, which is a felony. In addition, he is being slammed with a misdemeanor charge of sodomy.
It is unclear if he currently has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.
The victim’s mother actually caught her son and Crosby in the act. According to News4Jax, suspicious after her son didn’t explain where he was going, she tailed him and followed him to a park. It was there that she caught the 42-year-old man engaging in a sexual act with her teen son inside a car.
After placing Crosby on leave, Ware County Schools Superintendent Jim LeBrun put out a brief statement, which said, "The school district is fully cooperating with all law enforcement agencies and the Professional Standards Commission. No further information will be available until the police investigation and the district investigation have been completed."
Pierce County Sheriff Ramsey Bennett said of Crosby’s part-time employment, "This gives us all a black eye. [...] As a law enforcement officer, it's not just our duty to avoid evil, but also to avoid the appearance of evil."
According to jail records, Crosby’s bail is set to $150,000.
