A man from Richmond, Virginia is accused of leaving his wife to be with his biological daughter, who he allegedly impregnated and intended to marry. According to NBC 4, Steven Walter Pladl and his wife gave birth to Katie Rose Pladl in 1998. She was adopted by another family and lived out of state. On her 18th birthday, she contacted Steven and her mother in hopes to reconnect with her biological family. She soon moved to their home in August 2016, Cosmopolitan reports. Just months later, Steven and his wife separated, according to WNCN.

Before the couple’s separation, the wife noticed that something was off. She told police that Steven often slept on the floor of Katie’s room. The mother also snooped and read a diary belonging to one of her other two children, which revealed that Katie was pregnant. That diary entry also accused Steven of being the baby’s father. Steven allegedly urged his other children to call Katie their stepmom.

Steven allegedly admitted to impregnating their daughter, according to police records. He also allegedly told police that he and Katie wanted to get married, AJC reports. At some point, the couple moved to North Carolina.

Katie had a baby in September, and her Instagram features photos of him and Steven posing as a happy family. One post reveals that the two got married in a “simple wedding.”

In November both Katie, 20,  and Steven, 42 were arrested. Both were given a $1 million dollar bond. Steven and Katie were charged with incest with adult, adultery, and contributing to delinquency. According to KRON4, Steven has already bonded out of jail. Katie is awaiting extradition back to Virginia.

Both face multiple years in prison, if convicted.

“This is a pretty unique set of facts, I would say,” Todd Stone, a legal analyst for CBS 6 said. “It’s a class five felony if that occurs in Virginia, and that means you can get up to 10 years in prison.”

Katie’s mother has accused Steven of manipulating Katie.
