A young mother whose 3-year-old son froze to death outside in bone-chilling weather was sentenced for involunatary manslaughter. As WSOCTV reports, 24-year-old Jamie Basinger of North Carolina pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 245 days in jail.
Since she's already served that, she may be able to get credit for time served and be free soon.
Authorities claim that the child, Landyn, froze to death on March 15—while the mom slept inside—after a passerby spotted him on the front porch. The temperature at the time was in the 20s. "I love my kid to death, and I would never do nothing to hurt him," Basinger said.
Authorities share that she admitted to being on meth and marijuana prior to the incident, which apparently impaired her judgment and response. "She didn't hear him. She didn't hear him leave the room. Didn't hear him leave the house. Didn't hear him banging on the door. She was asleep while he was freezing to death," said Assistant District Attorney Michelle Lippert.
Her attorney admitted that she knows what she did was wrong but she never meant to harm Landyn. “She's here to take responsibility for this. But again, no matter of punishment is gonna take away what's in her heart." As part of her plea deal, the prosecution dropped a charge of child abuse.
The child celebrated his third birthday just the day before his death.
