A man from Kentucky bore witness to one of the worst sights imaginable on Christmas Eve morning. Johnny Saylor’s wife Lorraine was out in her yard putting out seeds for birds when she was attacked by two pit bulls.
According to WBIR, Johnny woke up and looked for his wife. When he found her, she had been mauled.
Johnny’s brother was able to distract the pit bulls, giving Johnny time to grab his gun. According to the New York Daily News, he was able to shoot one of the vicious dogs dead. The other ran off after being injured by gunfire.
Sadly, Lorraine didn’t survive the attack. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnny suffered injuries to his head and arm, but he is expected to survive.
The owner of the dogs, Johnny Lankford, 42, was arrested and charged with harboring a vicious animal. According to WBIR, he was already imprisoned at the time of the attack for unrelated charges including domestic violence. It is unclear if he has a lawyer who can defend him at this time. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.
The dog who ran off in the attack returned to Lankford’s home on Christmas. It was subsequently put down, WKRN reported.
This incident was not the only deadly attack by pit pulls this month. Police in Virginia said a 22-year-old woman was killed by her own dogs, who reportedly mauled her to death and then ate her.
