Over $20,000 has been raised for the family of a 4-month-old girl who was attacked by a raccoon inside her home. Ashley Rodgers of Philadelphia said her baby was viciously attacked on Wednesday inside the family’s studio apartment, The Associated Press reported. The family had just moved into the home days prior.
“My daughter was laying on the bed sleeping and I went to take my son to the bathroom. We heard a sound upstairs and we see a raccoon run down the steps,” Rodgers recalled to CBS Philadelphia. “When I finally got to her, she was laying on the floor so it had dragged her off the bed, across the room, and she was bleeding and crying and her whole face was red.”
The baby girl, Journi Black, had to undergo four hours of surgery as a result of the attack, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. She also needed 65 stitches on her face. It will take her a year to recover, doctors said.
“It’s just ridiculous,” Samuel Black, the girl’s dad, told CBS Philadelphia. “My daughter could have lost her life.”
According to The Associated Press, tenants had allegedly been complaining about a raccoon infestation at their current home. The city also issued a zoning violation to the property’s owner.
A spokeswoman for Philadelphia’s Licenses and Inspections Department revealed that the owner of that property doesn’t even have a rental license. So, according to CBS Philadelphia, it is not legal for him to rent to tenants. He told CBS Philly reporters when contacted that “everything has been resolved” and instructed them to call his lawyer. He did not give a name or contact information for an attorney.
Now, thanks to a generous outpouring from people all over the country, Journi will soon be in a new, raccoon-free home. People have also sent the family Christmas gifts. Gratitude for the help was expressed over GoFundMe.
“Merry Christmas! Thank you all for outpouring of love & support. Baby Journi is enjoying all the gifts You all really know how to make a girl feel special. Peace & Blessings to you and your family on this glorious day!”
