A disturbed New Mexico man ambushed his ex-girlfriend in her home, shooting her and killing her young three children, before turning the gun on himself. George Daniel Wechsler, 45, who went by the name Danny, was distraught after the woman broke up with him and upset that she wouldn’t let him deliver Christmas presents to her kids. Though they remain unnamed, the deceased were a girl, 6, and her 2 brothers, ages 5 and 9. Their 36-year-old mother was also shot, and is in critical but stable condition. Wechsler died from his self-inflicted gunshot wound after being brought to an area hospital.
Wechsler had a history of both stalking and violence. In 2002 he was arrested and pleaded guilty to stalking an ex-girlfriend, sending her emails that said “I hope you f***ing die,” and waiting outside her work armed with a gun. In 2015 he was arrested for assault after punching his own brother in the jaw, breaking two teeth. A neighbor in the trailer park where he lived said Wechsler was depressed after the woman broke up with him after a brief relationship. When he told the woman he wanted to deliver Christmas presents to her three children, the woman refused and told him not to come to her home or to contact her kids.
Police say, while the woman was out Monday, Wechsler broke into her house in Albuquerque, and waited for her to return. When she did, he ambushed the family and opened fire. According to police, the mother fought bravely to protect her three children, and was shot while trying to get them to safety.
