Meet Jennie from Chicago.
Jennie has two kids, Cameron and Willie.
Teddy is the father of Cameron, and her unborn child.
Teddy and Jennie have a long history.
Willie is Jennie's child from a previous marriage. They are no longer in contact with his abusive father.
Teddy was incarcerated twice during his relationship with Jennie for burglary and violating parole. He was in prison for the first three years of Cameron's life.
Now he's making up for lost time.
Teddy bonded with Cameron immediately, and, despite his long incarceration, Teddy's paternal instincts were instantaneous.
Jennie wants to place the child for adoption. Neither of them have money (Teddy is in trade school for construction) and Jennie is afraid that Teddy will bail.
Teddy is adamant about keeping the baby, and he's upset that Jennie doesn't trust him.
Meet Alyssa. She has two children and a husband.
She made a choice to be a surrogate for her childhood friend, Crystal.
Crystal -- who hasn't been able to have children on her own -- can't believe how selfless Alyssa is.
Crystal is worried for her friend's well-being, however, and is concerned that Alyssa might have a change of heart once she has the baby.
Alyssa strongly believes that she will be able to carry out the adoption without a problem.
They even made t-shirts to mark the occasion!
Jennie wants to demonstrate to Teddy that another child would be too expensive. She takes him on a shopping trip to buy baby supplies.
Indeed, Teddy comes up short and the cashier offers to get the rest. Teddy says the experience was humiliating, but he still wants to raise the child.
Alyssa is getting closer to her due date.
She goes to visit her mother and sister, Fonda. Her mother thinks that what she's doing it very brave..
But Fonda says it's against her morals, and can't believe Alyssa would disconnect from her own child emotionally.
Alyssa thinks her sister is being a jerk.
Jennie tells Cameron and Willie that she plans to place their brother for adoption.
It....doesn't go over well.
The kids don't want to lose their brother.
Eventually Willie shuts down.
Meanwhile, Christian (Alyssa's husband), Crystal and Alyssa all sit down for dinner. Christian says he is very emotionally ready for the adoption.
Crystal worries that Alyssa is putting up defense mechanisms, and that she might be emotionally disconnecting from the situation.
Christian worries that "reality will hit" Alyssa, and that it might lead to issues during the adoption. Alyssa assures them that she's fine with it.
Jennie and Teddy have a sit-down with Jennie's friend, Robin. Both women grill Teddy about money, and Robin expresses fear that Teddy will leave.
Teddy gets upset, wondering why he and Jennie would get back together in the first place since she doesn't trust him. He also doesn't want his child to be punished for his mistakes.
After the talk, Teddy is still sure that he wants to keep the child, and he says an adoption would also put an end to his relationship with Jennie.
Later, Jennie sits Teddy down...and tells him that she plans to keep the child.
Teddy is THRILLED!
Let the goofy dad act begin!
Soon after, Jennie goes into labor.
She's in a lot of pain.
The child's head is facing the wrong way, and Jennie has to undergo a C-section.
But Jalen is born!
Teddy, Jennie and Jalen bond.
Meanwhile, Alyssa has contractions.
She gives birth to lovely Tyler.
After the birth, Alyssa is faced with the adoption paperwork.
She signs it.
Crystal couldn't be more grateful.
And neither could Alyssa, for the chance to help a friend.
Meanwhile...Jalen is so freaking cute.
He bonds with Willie and Cameron.
And of course, Teddy, who has stepped up to the plate and then some.
