Martinis & Murder Cocktail Recipe: For The Bees

Pair this refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail with episode #111 where John Thrasher talks to Debra Newell and Laura Richards about “Dirty John.”

By Gina Pace

Bravo’s “Dirty John,” a dramatized version of the true crime podcast from the LA Times of the same name, has a super-cut of John Meehan serving Debra Newell smoothies to charm her.

And while we don’t advocate being like Meehan in any way, sometimes, you do need a refreshing drink sans alcohol. If you’re abstaining, or want to make up something special for a friend that is, try this cocktail, which was created by The Fat Radish. It uses Seedlip, which is a newish non-alcoholic spirit that comes in three varieties distilled with a variety of herbs and spices.

This utilizes the Garden formula, which is fresh and light and you can use it in place of a vodka or a gin. This cocktail is not only booze free — it’s also great for vegans. It uses aquafaba, which is the liquid that chickpeas soak in in the can, instead of egg whites to give the drink texture and body without any animal products.

Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients
2 ounces Seedlip Garden 108
¾  ounce Love Potion Cordial *
½ ounce lemon juice
¾ ounce aquafaba**
Optional: Bee pollen for garinish.

Method:
Dry shake all the ingredients, and then add ice and shake briefly. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with bee pollen.

*Love Potion Cordial:
Brew 4 cups of hibiscus tea, which should be quite strong. Combine with 4 cups granulated sugar.
**To make aquafaba, strain the liquid off of one can of chickpeas.

Pair the cocktail with this episode, which has an interview with Debra Newell, as well as Laura Richards, a criminal behavior analyst as they talk to John Thrasher about the insidious tactic of coercive control. And to see more from Oxygen's "Dirty John, The Dirty Truth," visit here.
