10 Reasons We Love T-Pain

Happy #TPainAppreciationDay!

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Happy T-Pain Appreciation Day! Yes. According to social media, that is actually a thing. We did not make this up. In just a few months, the singer/rapper releases his first album in four years, Stoicville: The Phoenix. Until then, let’s celebrate the awesomeness of the hit-making, Auto-Tune icon T-Pain.

1. "I'm 'n Luv (Wit a Stripper)"

In 2005, a decade before it became cool to be a stripper/look like a stripper/date a stripper, T-Pain gave girls working the pole an anthem. His "I'm 'n Luv (Wit a Stripper)" was about a man falling in love at the strip club. It was controversial when it was released. Since then, guys like Kanye West, Drake and Tyga have actually fallen in love, dated or married strippers. Plus, he put his money where his mouth was and allegedly has spent millions on strippers

2 . King of Auto-Tune

Kanye West loves it. Lil Wayne uses it. Future’s music is dependent on it. Jay Z even tried to kill it off. Auto-Tune. T-Pain is the most successful artist to leverage that weird robotic sound effect. It’s made him very rich and forever changed the landscape of modern hip-hop.

3. Drunk in Love Songs

Unless you’ve lived under a rock in the 2000s, you’ve danced to some T-Pain songs. Tracks like “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')," "Bartender" and “Blame It” were made for boozy nights and morning-after hangovers.

4. Feel Good Anthems

T-Pain wasn’t just about music for the club. With his versatile vocals, he accompanied several monster, hip-hop hits like Kanye West’s “Good Life” and Rick Ross’ “The Boss.”

5. Get Low

Remember when every rapper and his mama had a fashion line? We don’t personally know anyone who wore Nelly’s Apple Bottom jeans (That name. Ugh!). T-Pain turned the line into a household name with his chorus on Flo-Rida’s “Low.” Try to listen to that song and not go low, low, low, low…

6. He Rapped with Taylor Swift

T-Pain spit verses with T-Swift. Nuff said.

7. Dance Dance Revolution

Did you know T-Pain can dance? Like, actually dance? He may not look like a dancer in the traditional sense but dude can get down. Watch him pop, lock and drop it against Chris Brown.

8. Fresh Off the Boat

We love when celebrities can make fun of themselves. In 2009, T-Pain joined The Lonely Island for their hilarious parody “I Am On A Boat.” The song went viral from Saturday Night Live and was nominated for a Grammy.

9. Freaknik: The Musical

A man of many talents T-Pain starred and produced in a one-hour animation special for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim called Freaknik: The Musical with Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross and Andy Samberg. For the youngins, Freaknik was an annual party in Atlanta in the 80s and 90s, filled with partying and debauchery. “I play the Spirit of Freaknik. Everywhere I go, it’s on and poppin’.”

10. Mad Hatter

Lions and tigers and T-Pain’s hats (Oh my!) He loves his big, whimsical hats. Circus swag has never looked so good.
