Amandla Stenberg may be known best as Rue from the Hunger Games, but she's captured many a heart with her fearless social commentary. The budding activist recently came out as bisexual via a Snapchat video wherein she states that she identifies as a "black, bisexual woman."
In addition to being the cover girl of Teen Vogue's February issue, the 17-year-old took over the publication's Snapchat account on Thursday, gifting followers with a peek into her everyday life. Near the end of the day, Amandla not only came out as bisexual, but had some wise words to share about identity for anyone watching.
"It's a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it's deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn't be in," she shared - while rocking a pretty glorious afro, if I do say so myself. "As someone who identifies as a black, bisexual woman I've been through it, and it hurts, and it's awkward and it's uncomfortable but then I realized because of Solange and Ava DuVernay and Willow and all the black girls watching this right now, that there's absolutely nothing to change."
"We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow," Amandla continued. "I definitely believe in the concept of rebellion through selfhood and rebellion just by embracing your true identity no matter what you're being told. Here I am being myself and its hard and vulnerable and its definitely a process but Im learning and Im growing."
