Is it a luxury bag or a cheap shopping tote? Balenciaga's new It bag looks a whole lot like a cheap shopping bag found in Thailand. Mashable points out how fashion fans are posting knockoff photos online and it's really hard to tell the difference between Balenciaga's Autumn/Winter 2016-17 accessory and Thailand's "rainbow bag" known as the "sampheng bag."
The Thai version costs less than a dollar while the French retailer's version is about $1000 per The Fashion Law. According that a statement from Nantawan Sakunkarn, who is the director general for Thailand’s Commerce Ministry's Intellectual Property Department, Balenciaga did not copy the bag. "The rainbow bag has been used in Thailand for a long time. It's not illegal to carry it to Europe as it's not a copycat. If one intends to copy, the material, pattern, shape and color must be the same. As well, there's usually a fake trademark which leads others to think it's a brand-name item.”
$1 versus $1000? You decide.
