Is Blake Lively's Booty Comment Racist?

Racist or body-positive song lyric?

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Blake Lively loves her new curves. The pregnant actress posted a photo of herself from the Cannes Film Festival and captioned it "L.A. face with an Oakland booty." The song lyric from Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" has caused a frenzy on social media, with critics blasting Blake as being racially insensitive.

The controversy revolves around the idea that an "Oakland booty" references a black woman's body, and whether the white actress is essentially fetishizing it. "Clearly a joke, but could have been more thought out," said a fan on Instagram. Another pointed to Blake's controversial wedding, which took place at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina, as proof of the actress' poor taste when it comes to race"As if getting married on a slave plantation wasn't reason enough to hate her."

The song also got reality star Khloe Kardashian in hot water last year. "LA face and LA booty cause its fake..." commented one fan on Instagram, when she captioned a photo with the same lyric.

No comment yet from Sir Mix-A-Lot on whether Blake--or anyone else-- should appropriate his famous line. What do you think?
