Chrisette Michele is speaking out about her decision to perform at at Donald Trump's presidential inauguration tomorrow. "My heart is broken for our country, for the hopes of our children, for the fights of those who came before us," she says in an Instagram post.
Michele defends her controversial presence, citing the need for a "bridge" in the divided nation. "Today, I hope that Great Moments begin in peaceful & progressive conversation." She says that she isn't worried about backlash. "I am willing to be a bridge. I don't mind 'These Stones', if they allow me to be a voice for the voiceless.I am here." She ends, "I am here, representing you, because this is what matters."
Her decision to perform has been blasted by fans and celebrities alike. Spike Lee for instance, promised to boycott Chrisette's music in his new Netflix series.
Questlove of The Roots even offered to pay Chrisette not to perform.
