Christina Milian has had her share of high-profile relationships, from dating Lil Wayne to marrying The Dream, but she’s never opened up about her experience with domestic abuse. Until now. The singer reveals that she was in an abusive relationship as a teenager and her ex-boyfriend pointed a gun at her face.
“I’ve been holding on to this for too long,” she said to Huffington Post. “I lived in fear for a long time. I'm here to save someone. I really want to help other people, especially the youth.” The singer and reality star says she was 18 and her boyfriend was 19 years old at the time. “I was really goofy, fun and bubbly - but I was becoming dark. I found myself talking like him - cursing all the time. I couldn't look him in the eye. I stopped going to the studio and turning down opportunities because I didn't want to get into an argument. I was losing my spirit.”
She says she experienced a harrowing near-death experience that had her staring down the barrel of a gun. “One time he played Russian Roulette on me. He put one bullet in a gun and pointed it at my face. When you have a gun in your face, all you can think about is your family and people who love you. Also, I didn't think that if I went for help he would receive treatment or even be arrested.”
She eventually left, and although he tried to track her down—even going so far as to find her in other countries—she is now free. Christina has partnered with a new safety app called “Stop Attack” aimed at helping others in violent situations. “Find a way to separate yourself and change your number. Visit family or friends. Go to a shelter. Do that for your own healing,” she advises other women in similar situations. “This is your choice to live or die.”
