Just days after the Women's March, Donald Trump has reinstated a federal ban that would affect women's reproductive rights across the world. The Mexico City Policy, or Global Gag Rule," prohibits giving U.S. funding to nongovernmental organizations that offer women the option of abortion as part of family planning counseling.
According to The Huffington Post, America spends about $600 million a year on helping some 27 million women and couples around the globe with reproductive health programs. Although some proponents argue that American money shouldn't be used to fund abortions overseas, the site clarifies that it doesn't. The Helms Amendment has prevented U.S. funding for overseas abortions since 1973.
Women took to social media to share their dismay:
Critics worry that such a ban could prove deadly for women, who otherwise may resort to dangerous abortions. The World Health Organization reports that more than 21 million women a year in developing countries have unsafe abortions, leading to 13 percent of maternal deaths.
