Suge Knight is known for being one of hip-hop's most intimidating figures. One story that many fans may not know is that the former head of Death Row Records almost had a run-in with Eminem.
According to Byron "Big Naz" Williams, Eminem's bodyguard at the time, the altercation happened at The Source Awards in 2001. “We were at The Source Awards and we all know historically in the past, The Source Awards, someone always got shot,” he says in an interview with the Murder Master Music Show, per HipHopDX. “That was our first encounter with Suge Knight and his henchman. Em was going to his seat. The way they had the seating was all messed up and the bodyguards couldn’t sit with the artists...[which gave] people who got beef with other artists [an opportunity] to get at them.”
Williams says his client was surrounded by men in red shirts—and Knight's affiliation with the Bloods gang was no secret. "I noticed Em’s face changing, he’s turning like tomato red. There’s a sea of red guys around him. I had to bust through the middle man and snatch him up. Like, ‘Hey man what the hell’s going on up here?’ This is exactly what they said, ‘Death Row, motherf*cker, Death Row.'”
Williams says the issue stemmed from Knight's issues with Eminem's mentor, Dr. Dre. Lucky for everyone, the bodyguard was able to get Eminem out of the situation safely. [Photo: Getty Images]
