It has been a few months since the deadliest mass shooting in American history and the country is still struggling to understand what actually happened that night at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. While many victims are just now beginning to rebuild their lives, others wonder what motivated such a heinous crime. Now, Sitora Yusufiy, the ex-wife of shooter Omar Mateen, is speaking up about what she believes was going on: she thinks Mateen was gay and took out his own frustrations about his sexuality on others.
A video from Out explains the situation:
"There's no other way to explain him having so many dating site apps and visiting clubs and dancing with gay men and confiding in them," Yusufiy said. "I really feel like he was struggling with being himself because he was gay. I really believe that he was."
"There was no sexual connection between us. All he wanted to do was have children, to fit the criteria of his father and to make his family proud and that's what we did. He was never the one to initiate any romance or sexual contact."
Yusuify ultimately did become pregnant but seperated herself from Mateen after facing considerable abuse. Shortly thereafter she terminated the pregnancy. Yusuify also added that Mateen's father was very homophobic.
"He went and shot so many people in the month of Ramadan which is the holy month for Muslims which is when everything is supposed to be sacred. He might have thought that he was doing this for his father to be proud of him that he finally got rid of so many homosexuals in this sacred month," Yusufiy said.
Notably, the FBI still claims that no evidence was discovered to support this theory.
