Frank Ocean is no stranger to making waves. Most recently, he announced that he intentionally kept his long, long anticipated album “Blonde” from being considered for a Grammy, saying, “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”
Ocean is also open about having had a relationship in the past with a man, though he never has labeled himself as gay or bisexual, which has attracted a lot of attention. As LGBTQ people know, that kind of attention isn’t always good.
Shortly after the Pulse nightclub shooting, Ocean wrote a long open letter on Tumblr, sending a message of support to the LGBTQ community, talking about homophobia he has encountered. In his letter he tells a story about his father, writing, “I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a f*ggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.”
Now TMZ is reporting that Frank Ocean’s father, Calvin Cooksey, is suing him over this accusation. Cooksey claims that this incident never took place. He says he’s lost money and job opportunities in the film and entertainment business because everyone thinks he’s a bigot. The lawsuit is for $14.5 million in damages. TMZ points out that Cooksey also once sued Russell Simmons for saying he was a deadbeat dad, at the price of $142 million. That’s a lot of money to make off having a bad name.
