GOP Wants To Defund Planned Parenthood As Part Of Obamacare Repeal

And there's not much Democrats can do to stop it.

Well, this is bad: as part of the effort to repeal The Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare), Republicans are hoping to defund Planned Parenthood.

The details of the scheme are rather unspecific but Paul Ryan has made his intentions clear: “Planned Parenthood legislation would be in our reconciliation bill," he said in a statement.

Republicans are opposed to abortions, which make up only 3% of Planned Parenthood's services. The federal government does not provide funding for procedures that terminate pregnancies, yet Republicans are still going after the health organization, making their disdain for women rather clear.

“Two and a half million women, men and young people come through our doors every year for lifesaving care like cancer screenings, birth control, and STI and STD tests,” Planned Parenthood president and actual god damn superhero Cecile Richard said in a statement, “and they cannot afford to have basic reproductive health care attacked.”

“We are going to stand against this with every fiber of our beings,” said Rep. Diana DeGette, chairwoman of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, to the Washington Post.

According to Out: "In 2014, the group reported receiving $553 million dollars from the government. If this bill passes, Planned Parenthood estimates that roughly 40% of its total funding will be at risk."

With Donald Trump unlikely to veto the bill and a Republican controlled Senate, it seems likely this terrible measure will pass.
