Hijab-Wearing Teenager Has An Important Question For Emoji Makers

Sometimes you have to demand representation.

iOS10 has a ton of new emojis. The Unicode Consortium has created several emojis, including a rainbow flag and more professional emojis featuring women. There is one important emoji, for millions of women around the world, that was however overlooked.

According to Refinery 29, a 15-year-old is wondering why there are no women wearing a hijab? Rayouf Alhumedhi, a teenager from Saudi Arabia who lives in Berlin, wants to see an emoji with the traditional headscarf. She began wearing her hijab at 13 and found the omission problematic when creating a group chat with friends.

"The chat name was supposed to be [made up of] emojis of ourselves," she told Refinery29. "Obviously, I had no emoji that represented me — woman in headscarf — which got me thinking. Why isn't there an emoji that represents me and the millions of women across the globe? If there are four emojis that show the four stages of a mailbox, why isn't there one for the 500 million women that wear a headscarf? It made no sense to me whatsoever."

Here’s an artist rendering of what the emojis could look like from Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit.
