Elijah Wood, an actor who began his career in Hollywood at the age of just eight years old, just dropped a bomb on the film industry, and he has a reputable organization and growing evidence to back it.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, he revealed that there is a sex scandal brewing in the film industry of the United States, similar to the devastating child sex abuse case that came forth in the UK just a few years ago.
"You all grew up with Savile – Jesus, it must have been devastating," Wood said, 35, referring to the BBC personality who sexually abused over 400 victims before his death. "Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood," Wood commented. "It was all organized. There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind."
Wood said the abuse that has been brewing underneath the surface for years has only continued because victims “can’t speak as loudly as people in power.”
“There is a darkness in the underbelly – if you can imagine it, it’s probably happened,” Wood said. “That’s the tragedy of attempting to reveal what is happening to innocent people. They can be squashed but their lives have been irreparably damaged.”
And Wood isn't the first to bring these allegations to light.
According to Telegraph, a few child actors in the past have spoken about being courted and raped by older men who had been "leching around like vultures." And more than that, Independent points out that Anne Henry, the co-founder of Bizparents (an organization that assists young actors), claimed that Hollywood was sheltering over "100 active abusers"-- an allegation that correlates with Wood's comparison to Savile.
Jimmy Savile was a BBC radio and television celebrity who died a beloved man in the public eye, but soon after was infamously disgraced when 589 victims of abuse stepped forward; 450 of which claim sexual abuse from children aged five to elderly people aged 75. Wood credits his mother with protecting him from these pitfalls by always being nearby, and not allowing him to attend events where these incidents occurred. “She was far more concerned with raising me to be a good human than facilitating my career,” Wood continued. “If you’re innocent you have very little knowledge of the world and you want to succeed. People with parasitic interests will see you as their prey.”
As scary as it sounds, it looks like that quiet year in Hollywood so many of us have been commenting on, may be coming to a horrific end.
