The elevator fight between Jay Z and Solange may have happened way back in 2014, but it's always lived on in people's minds as one of the greatest pop culture mysteries in recent years. What started the fight? What were Jay and Solange saying to each other? Why did Beyonce seem so detached?
Following the release of the footage, the Carter family released a statement that basically amounted to telling the world to stay out of their business, and that was that. Besides Jay seemingly alluding to it on one of his songs years later, no one in the family has talked much about it — until now.
People reports that in a recent interview with Rap Radar, Jay opened up about his relationship with Solange, saying, "We had one disagreement ever. Before and after we’ve been cool. She's my sister. I will protect her. That's my sister, not my sister-in-law. My sister. Period."
"We've always had a great relationship," he added.
"I fought my brothers and argued with my brothers my whole life. It just so happens, who we are, these things go into a different space. But it ain't nothing," Jay continued.
Jay also spoke about another topic he previously only referenced in his lyrics — his reportedly damaged relationship with Kanye West.
"You got hurt, because this guy was talking about you on a stage," Jay said, no doubt referencing Kanye's on-stage rant last year. "But what really hurt me, you can't bring my kid or my wife into it."
He added later, "We've gotten past bigger issues, but you brought my family into it, now it's a problem with me."
