Fresh off the tails of beef with Wiz Kalifa comes a new Kanye West battle, this time with an old foe: Taylor Swift. Can the rapper's ultra-cool artiness withstand the bubbly superficiality of Swift? Will Taylor withstand the scathing and surreal twitter insults West hurls at her? Only time will tell.
But first, an explanation: Last night at the debut of Yeezy Season 3 / The Life of Pablo listening party / pop culture clusterf*ck of the new millennium, a song was dropped in which Kanye offered a slight, perhaps passive-aggressive nudge at Tay Tay. "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why, I made that bitch famous /God damn / I made that bitch famous," raps West, semi-polemically, on the new album.
Anticipating the reaction to the not-so-nice lyric, Kanye had apparently gotten the OK from Taylor prior to the release of the track. From TMZ: "Sources directly connected with Swift tell TMZ Kanye called her to explain it was a joke and wanted to make sure she wouldn’t be upset. We’re told Swift said she got the joke and gave him the thumbs up to release the song with the lyric."
Now here's where things start to get complicated. Apparently that call was never actually made, or if it was, there was a serious misunderstanding. The New York Times followed up after T. Swifts team sent out a statement on the song: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’”
Weird. Oh well. But wait! We're not actually done yet!
West has since been retaliating on (where else) Twitter. The chain of tweets goes on for a while, but here's some samples so you get the idea:
And on and on and on...
Team Taylor hasn't released any more official responses (you would think the one would be enough, but here we are). That being said, Taylor Swift's brother shot out the following on social media shortly after the debacle exploded:
