Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson has died at the age of 89, following a battle with terminal pancreatic cancer, just two days after the anniversary of his son Michael’s death.
TMZ first reported last week that Jackson was hospitalized with terminal cancer in Las Vegas, with sources claiming that some of his 11 children, including Janet Jackson, and his various grandchildren had begun to visit him at his bedside, where he was accompanied by his wife Katherine Jackson. He died at 3:30 a.m. early Wednesday morning, TMZ reported.
Jackson faced a number of health issues in his life, including a minor stroke in 2012 and another in 2015, People reported. In 2016, Jackson was reportedly hospitalized due to a high fever.
Jackson seemed to hint at problems with his health via Twitter on Sunday, writing, “I have seen more sunsets than I have left to see. The sun rises when the time comes and whether you like it or not the sun sets when the time comes.”
Posted alongside the message was a photo of Jackson standing on what looks to be a pier and staring out at the water as the sun sets.
Paris Jackson, daughter of the late Michael Jackson, later claimed that the tweet was not written by her grandfather. After initially calling the post “beautiful,” Paris Jackson said that it upset her to see whoever was in charge of his account “taking advantage of it.”
“My grandfather did not tweet this. I’m not sure if he’s ever used this account,” she continued. She tweeted later, “I was with him there’s no possible way for him to have tweeted it.” The identity of the person running the account is unknown.
During his life, Jackson managed the careers of the Jackson 5, as well as the solo efforts of Michael and Janet.
He was long criticized for physically abusing his children — especially Michael, who was reportedly still afraid of his father, even as an adult, according to CNN.
In a 2013 interview with Piers Morgan, Joe Jackson stood by his actions. “I’m glad I was tough, because look what I came out with,” he said. “I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right.”
