Is Nicki Minaj switching over to gospel? Probably not, but the rapper did dip her toe into the waters of a brand new genre recently.
BET reports that Minaj teamed up with gospel singer Tasha Cobbs-Leonard for the song "I'm Getting Ready," which will be featured on Cobbs-Leonard's new album, Heart. Passion. Pursuit., set to drop on August 25.
A number of fans disapproved of the gospel singer's choice to collaborate with Minaj; Cobbs-Leonard later made fun of the backlash in an Instagram post, posting a meme of shocked churchgoers underneath the words, "When saints found out that Tasha Cobbs-Leonard & Nicki Minaj finally did a gospel track together."
Cobbs-Leonard defended her decision by citing a bible verse (Romans 14:1 MSG.), which reads, "Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don't see things the way you do. And don't jump all over them every time they do or say something you don't agree with -- even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own story to deal with them. Treat them gently."
Minaj has been a vocal fan of Cobbs-Leonard for some time now; she even gave her a shout-out on social media earlier this year, congratulating her on her marriage.
Minaj also promoted the track on her IG. Will you be checking it out?
