Orange Is The New Black fans will recognize Dascha Polanco for her role as Daya on the hit Netflix show about life in a women's prison, but life may be coming too close to imitating art for this actress. Polanco is currently embroiled in a court battle for allegedly laying hands on a teenage girl.
According to Page Six, Dascha was first arrested back in July for allegedly assaulting 17-year-old Michelle Cardona. Cardona claims that Polanco pulled her hair, scratched her arms, and punched her in the head with a closed fist multiple times. The incident reportedly took place in Polanco's home after Polanco invited Cardona over via text message. Police say that Cardona had to be hospitalized for her injuries, having suffered "bruising and redness to her face, scratches to her arms, and substantial pain."
Polanco appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court yesterday (which was, incidentally, also her birthday). Polanco's lawyer Gerald Lefcourt claims that his client was set up, telling People magazine "This is an attempt to extort money by making a false claim."
Polanco is due back in court in January, where she will face assault, attempted assault, and harassment charges.
