Throughout the week it has become increasingly clear that Donald Trump's administration does not have good intentions for the LGBTQ community. While the debate over whether or not Trump himself harbors homophobic feelings raged for a while, his pick of vice president (one of the most anti-LGBTQ people working in American politics) made it obvious that many sexual minorities will be threatened in Trump's America. Now, as Trump forms his cabinet and team of political advisors, we're starting to see the very real likelihood of true anti-gay extremists taking major positions of power.
The most startling detail revealed on this subject is that many on Trump's board are associated with The Family Research council, a militant far-right anti-gay organization. Their beliefs are so extreme that the Southern Poverty Law Center has labelled them a hate group. Here's how SPL describes their work: "The FRC often makes false claims about the LGBT community based on discredited research and junk science. The intention is to denigrate LGBT people in its battles against same-sex marriage, hate crimes laws, anti-bullying programs and the repeal of the military’s 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell' policy.
To make the case that the LGBT community is a threat to American society, the FRC employs a number of 'policy experts' whose 'research' has allowed the FRC to be extremely active politically in shaping public debate. Its research fellows and leaders often testify before Congress and appear in the mainstream media. It also works at the grassroots level, conducting outreach to pastors in an effort to 'transform the culture.'"
A terrifying report from the Human Rights Campaign introduces us to the fundamentalist politicians being considered for important roles. The names include Ken Blackwell (a Senior Fellow at the FRC who "has spent his entire career going after LGBTQ Americans"), Former Attorney General Ed Meese (a fellow at the FRC who thinks that laws protecting LGBTQ people are "not necessary"), and Kay Cole James (former senior Vice President at the FRC who compared LGBTQs to drug addicts and sinners).
These people will surely work towards taking away rights from gays and queers. They've been doing so their whole lives.
This is all absolutely terrifying.
