Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus about a year ago, which is an autoimmune disease that can attack different parts of the body and is often very painful and fatiguing. She continued to tour and make appearances, which is a pretty physically demanding enterprise even if you’re not sick.
In a statement to People magazine on Monday, Gomez announced that she needed to take some time off to take care of her health and get back on track. She says,”As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways… I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."
"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off," she continued. "Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."
Gomez recently had a very public blow up with her ex, Justin Bieber, over Instagram that appeared to lead to him deleting his account. It's difficult to conduct your messy relationship drama in front of such a huge public audience, and Gomez has been relatively quiet on social media since. It may be that the stress of work, lupus, and life pushed her to make choices she regrets. In any case, it's great that she's taking the rest of the year off to do what she needs to stay strong.
