Sweden is working to raise awareness around gender discrimination. As part of a weeklong effort, one union has started a special hotline to report cases of mansplaining.
"Mansplaining" is that annoying thing men do when they're trying to explain something to women (who they think know nothing). It's sexist and it's condescending, and every woman experiences it.
The mansplain hotline was set up by Unionen, a trade union of some 600,000 private-sector employees, according to the New York Times. “Our objective is to contribute to awareness and start a discussion which we hope will be the first step in changing the way we treat each other and talk about each other in the workplace,” says Jennie Zetterström, a union spokeswoman.“It’s important to create awareness about how seemingly small things that we do or say add up to a larger issue.”
Both women and men are encouraged to make the temporary mansplaining hotline bling.
