Well, that didn’t take long. Following intense outrage from both the internet and Paris Jackson, Sky Arts has decided to pull its episode of Urban Myths featuring Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson. People were upset to begin with when it was announced that Fiennes, a white man, would be playing the King of Pop, but when the trailer was released earlier this week it brought home what a nightmare the whole thing was overall. Paris tweeted that she found it incredibly disrespectful and that it made her “want to vomit.”
The episode was based on the rumor that following 9/11, Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando all piled into a car and attempted to flee the city. This rumor is unconfirmed, and though it is amusing to imagine that scenario, no one thought Fiennes in the role was a laughing matter.
A spokesperson for Sky Arts told Deadline, “We have taken the decision not to broadcast ‘Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon,’ a half-hour episode from the Sky Arts ‘Urban Myths’ series, in light of the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family. We set out to take a light-hearted look at reportedly true events and never intended to cause any offense. Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision.”
Fiennes is probably sick of freaking hearing about it by now. He is likely happy to leave the whole experience behind him—as are we all.
