A few days ago, a young man was found dead in Demi Moore’s swimming pool. While the starlet was away visiting her daughters, her assistant threw a party in her home. By Sunday morning, the 21-year-old man was discovered in the deep end, and little has been revealed about what happened.
It appears to be a freak accident, of which there are no shortage in Hollywood it would seem. Throughout pop culture history, these accidents have chilled and perplexed us. Some resulted in death, and others in serious injury, but the common thread is that they were all under strange circumstances. Here are eight of the most notorious celebrity freak accidents.
In perhaps the most commonly known celebrity freak accidents, Brandon Lee died on the set of The Crow in 1993 when an improperly deactivated prop bullet struck him in the spine. Ironically, they were filming his death scene. It was thought that he would become as big of a star as his father Bruce Lee, but sadly, his life ended at the age of 28.
In the winter of 1998, Sonny Bono crashed into a tree and died in a tragic ski accident while on vacation with his wife and kids. He reportedly ignored signs that prohibited skiiers from zigzagging through a wooded area, and unfortunately he paid dearly.
David Carradine died in June 2009 under extremely bizarre circumstances in a hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand. At first, it was believed he had committed suicide, but his autopsy revealed it was likely due to auto-erotic asphyxiation. He had basically strangled himself to death, cutting his short an astounding acting career.
Michael Hutchence, lead singer of Australian rock group INXS, died under strange circumstances in November 1997. What was initially thought to be a suicide was later discovered to be possibly due to auto-erotic asphyxiation, although that was never proven. He died with a mix of drugs and alcohol in his system and was very depressed at the time of his death due to custody issues with wife Paula Yates. His last night on earth was a pretty sordid one, and theories abound on his actual cause of death -- but ultimately, it was listed as a suicide.
R&B singer Charmayne's death is so freakish it almost seems unbelievable. While having a perfectly normal evening alone at home, she dropped a wine glass, fell on the broken pieces, and cut her neck. Ultimately, she bled to death. Talk about a one in a million tragedy.
In May 1999, Professional wrestler Owen Hart was doing a stunt during a WWE performance when he plummeted to his eventual death from a 24-meter fall. A faulty harness was determined to be the cause of this freak accident. He was only 34 years old.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Christopher Reeve had the horse-riding accident that left him quadriplegic. The dashing Superman actor fell from his horse while attempting an equestrian stunt and landed directly on his head, causing total paralysis. He died in 2004 of cardiac arrest after spending the last nine years of his life in a wheelchair. A terribly sad way for the super hero to leave this world.
Oddly enough, Brad Pitt suffered a freak accident injuring his Achilles tendon. The reason it was odd? He was playing the character Achilles while filming the movie Troy. His injury delayed filming for months but he ultimately recovered and was able to finish his scenes.
