The world isn’t all garbage all the time, as this gorgeous Miss Minnesota USA proved when she walked in the beauty pageant rocking her burkini to Bruno Mars. Halima Aden was born in a Kenyan refugee camp before moving to the United States when she was six years old. She settled in St. Cloud and became the fully covered Muslim woman to participate in the contest, wearing a hijab as well as a burkini.
She told MPR News that she wants to show a different side of Muslim culture in the mainstream media, saying, “What I wanted to do was to just give people a different perspective...We just needed one more thing to unify us. This is a small act, but I feel like having the title of Miss Minnesota USA when you are a Somali-American, when you are a Muslim woman, I think that would open up people's eyes."
The pageant’s director, Denise Wallace, told ABC 7 that it was an easy decision to allow Aden to appear covered in the competition, saying, "The organization continues to evolve as women evolve...The Miss Universe organization is proud to be the forefront of the diversity of beauty.”
Aden came in fifteenth in the competition, but she still seems pretty happy with the experience, writing on Facebook, “‘Be You’ was what my aunt always told me. And tonight I finally realized what she meant. This has been such a fun experience ! Thank you so much to everyone who came out and cheered. I didn't come home with a crown but I did come home to a ton of DMs … you guys are AWESOME.”
