Hey, did you guys know that women rap? It's true! A whole bunch of 'em! And they have for a while!
It's certainly great to see the VH1's Hip-Hop Honors presentation finally taking the time to recognize some ladies, but we have to ask: what the hell took them so long?
After a six-year hiatus, the music network is bringing back the prestiguous tribute and is this time focusing on womenfolk. From Billboard: "While no honorees were announced, VH1 said it would focus exclusively on female 'trailblazers and trend-setters' in the male-dominated field."
VH1 has only honored a few women in the past, so there still are plenty of deserving ladies lying in wait who are eligible for the award.
As excited as I am to watch a parade of empowered ladies spitting pure fire, doesn't this whole thing kind of feel way overdue, if not downright condescending? Wouldn't it be more progressive to have seen women being celebrated as equal to men all along?
Anyway, the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors will air on air live from New York City on July 11, 2016.
To get you hyped for the event, here's their tribute to Salt N' Peppa from 2005:
