Angela Bassett is a chameleon. She's portrayed pop icons and scorned witches, but will she be adding 'Starfleet Captain' to her impressive resume in the very near future?
When CBS announced that they were rebooting Star Trek - and creating completely new characters and worlds rather than recreate the ones we're familiar with - some fans were skeptical, but casting a big name like Angela Bassett might be enough to win over the nonbelievers.
In a recent interview, showrunner Bryan Fuller revealed that he would love to see the legendary actress in the captain's chair.
"I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that's who I would love to have - you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show, but that's in the future to be told," he told Entertainment Weekly.
I, for one, would love it too, but the question is, will it really happen? Angela hasn't responded publicly to the shoutout yet, but I'm hoping fans can get some traction behind this idea. Diversity has been the talk of tinseltown lately, but it's time for those in positions of power to past the point of talking about it so that viewers can start to see real change on our TV screens sometime soon.
It's likely that we'll just have to wait and see. The new series won't be airing until early 2017, at which point a preview episode will air on CBS while the rest of the show will stream exclusively on CBS All Access.
