Suspected Serial Killer Caught After Rite Aid Cashier Sneaks GPS Tracker Into His Bag
District Attorney Larry Krasner says that workers deserve to be safe after Keith Gibson has been linked to a slew of murders of robberies.
An alleged serial killer’s crime spree has been thwarted after a clever Rite Aid cashier threw a GPS tracker into his bag during a robbery.
Keith Gibson, 39, was arrested on Tuesday a block away from a New Castle, Delaware Rite Aid following a robbery at the location, according to KYW-TV. During that robbery, the quick-thinking cashier snuck a GPS tracker into the bag of cash Gibson demanded.
That decision has been credited for helping police locate Gibson, who has now been linked to multiple killings. He's also accused of critically shooting a teen girl in Wilmington this week, KWY-TV reported.
Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Frank Vanore claims that Gibson shot and killed 41-year-old Dunkin Donuts manager Christine Lugo over the weekend, WTXF-TV reports. He allegedly stole around $300 in the Philadelphia store before shooting Lugo in the head.
“We believe Mr. Gibson is the perpetrator,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Frank Vanore said earlier this week. The department as well as the Wilmington Police Department have not returned Oxygen.com’s request for comment.
Using video footage of that incident, authorities linked him to the May 15 fatal shooting of Leslie Basilio, a T-Mobile store employee in Elsmere, Delaware. The mother of two was robbed before she was shot in the head inside the store.
There is speculation that Gibson is responsible for the February murder of his mother, Christine Gibson. Her loved ones had expressed fears that her son had something to do with her death, KWY-TV reports.
Her colleague, United Peers Operations Manager Linda Osuigwe, found her body and told the outlet “We were suspicious, but we had no proof.”
"The crimes we allege Keith Gibson committed on June 5th are shocking,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement. “We are heartbroken for Ms. Christine Lugo and for everyone who is grieving her loss.”
He added that everyone, “from delivery drivers to store managers -- deserve to be safe at work at all hours, and to come home to our loved ones.”
It’s not clear if Gibson has an attorney. He has been charged with robbery and other felony counts in Wilmington, where he was ordered held on $305,000 cash-only bail. Other charges are pending.
