South Dakota Mom Pleads Guilty To Killing Toddler After He Wet His Bed
Katrina Shangreaux is accused of beating and even biting his son Kylen after he wet his bed. The boy's grandma Sonya Dubray is accused of helping cover up his death.
A mother from Porcupine, South Dakota could spend the rest of her life behind bars for killing her son after he wet his bed.
According to court records, 30-year-old Katrina Shangreaux, of Porcupine admitted to drinking alcohol and taking pain medication at the time of her son Kylen’s death in 2016. The two-year-old died after suffering blunt trauma injuries to the head and abdomen. Shangreaux was accused of punching and kicking the child.
Shangreaux's mother Sonya Dubray, has pleaded not guilty to hindering the investigation. According to the court records, Dubray allegedly tried to cover up the murder by using either "bleach or a bleach-like cleaning substance” and by washing Kylen’s clothes. She also told police that potty training was the “catalyst” for the abuse of her grandson.
In a written statement to police, Shangreaux allegedly admitted assaulting Kylen after he wet his bed, according to The Rapid City Journal. She told police she used a belt to brutally assault the boy. Police said she admitted to throwing him, kicking him, biting him and injuring his private parts. She wrote that she eventually stopped the abuse after “she saw that he appeared different and realized how badly she had injured him.”
After the assault, Shangreaux and Dubray tried to get the boy to drink apple juice but he fell to the ground and soiled himself. They allegedly cleaned up the blood on him and at the scene before calling for help. Kylen was pronounced dead after he was transferred to a nearby hospital.
A sentencing date hasn’t been scheduled yet, but the second-degree murder charge could cost the mother the rest of her life in prison.
Kylen’s dad is currently in federal prison for an abuse conviction regarding a child he had with a different woman, The Associated Press reported. It is unclear when Dubray’s trial will be.
A Facebook group called Justice for Kylen has been set up for Kylen. The group has nearly 7,000 people.
