An Ohio teen who was away at a college thought her mom would be ecstatic when she surprised her with an unannounced visit, but she ended up shot after her mother reportedly mistook her for an intruder.

The 18-year-old was shot in Girard on Friday night during the surprise visit.

"My girlfriend just came home from college and her mom didn't know, like honestly –– she accidentally shot her and we don't know what to do,” the teen’s boyfriend exclaimed with panic during a call to 911, obtained by WFMJ in Youngstown.

He went on to say that he thought the mother shot the daughter in the arm and that she was bleeding “pretty bad.”

The gun used in the incident was a .38 special.

"The mother who has a valid CCW [concealed weapon] permit - even though she was in her own house, was startled by some noises she heard in the kitchen or hallway area. She stated that the bedroom door opened where she was at –– and she had a gun readily available and she fired a round at someone coming through the door,” Girard Police Chief John Norman told WFMJ.

He added that the mother was very distraught. “As I ran through the door, she was in fear for her life and shot me,” the teen reportedly wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post, the New York Post reports. “I crouched down and let out two screams.”

It’s not clear if any charges against the mother will be pursued. Norman said that’s up to prosecutors.

The teen has been treated and released from the hospital.
