President Trump has issued yet another controversial (and perhaps sexist) tweet, this time addressing the ongoing accusations being made against him by several women who have noted his long history of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Trump issued the following tweet at 4:10 AM and 5:03 AM this morning:
"Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don’t know and/or have never met. FAKE NEWS!" reads the first tweet.
"Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office “begging” for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!" reads the second.
The tweet, responding to growing calls from a handful of politicians and citizens to have the President resign in the wake of a bevy of allegations, immediately received blowback from various political groups from both parties who noted the audacity, baselessness, and not-so-subtle sexism of the claims made within them.
“A lot of people believe that that means [Gillibrand] would have done sexual favors,” said notable conservative pundit Gretchen Carlson said, “and that is absolutely disgusting.”
"Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame [Gillibrand]? Do you know who you're picking a fight with? Good luck with that," said Senator Elizabeth Warren in a tweet.
Senator Gillibrand herself has also responded:
"You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office," she wrote.
The White House's official position on the issue of the President's sexual harassment accusations is that the women coming forward are liars.
