On February 19, 1992 Jeffrey Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison after he confessed to killing, dismembering and sometimes eating 17 boys and men. As Wisconsin no death penalty, it was the maximum sentence allowed. The three-week long trial had no shortage of sad and unsettling moments. Here are some of the most shocking.
On November 11, Oxygen will air a special two-night event, Dahmer on Dahmer: A Serial Killer Speaks, with new revelations about the infamous serial killer.
1. When a victim’s sibling lunged at Dahmer
Nine relatives of Dahmer’s victims spoke on the stand to describe the pain they’ve endured because of the serial killer’s actions. The statements were heartbreaking, but none more than Rita Isbell’s (which starts at 2:19 in the video below.) Dahmer killed her brother Errol Lindsey and Isbell’s grief erupted into an emotional outburst.
"Whatever your name is, Satan! I don’t ever want to see my mother go through this again! Never Jeffrey! Jeffrey, I hate you!" she yelled at Dahmer.
She then lunged at the killer and had to be led away by bailiffs.
2. When Dahmer pleaded for two cops to get their jobs back
In his statement, Dahmer expressed remorse for the victims and their families. He additionally expressed remorse for causing two policemen to lose their jobs. Those officers led a bleeding 14-year-old Laotian-American who wanted their help back to Dahmer’s apartment where he then killed him. Konerak Sinthasomphone had fled Dahmer’s home and two women found him, injured and naked. They called police for help, according to the Chicago Tribune. But Sinthasomphone didn’t speak English and when he brought them to Dahmer’s home, the serial killer convinced him that he would take care of the boy.
"I hope and pray that they can get their jobs back because I know they did their best and I just plain fooled them," Dahmer said at his trial.
3. When a cop explained how long it took to boil a head
Detective Pat Kennedy described Dahmer’s confession to the courtroom. In his shocking testimony, he said it took about an hour to boil a human head, according to Dahmer.
“He states it takes about an hour to boil a head,” Kennedy said.
4. When the same cop talked about the head in the fridge
During that same testimony, Kennedy talked about a head belonging to another one of Dahmer’s victims.
“Regarding the head in the refrigerator, he states he met him: a black male about 25 years of age,” he said. He continued describing how other victims were dismembered and filleted by Dahmer. He states about one month ago he bought a 57-gallon industrial drum and began placing body parts in it.”
5. When Dahmer compared his crimes to a holocaust
Before Dahmer was sentenced he told the judge, "I take all the blame for what I did." He said he wished there were a death penalty in the state because he wanted to be put to death for the "holocaust" he had created, according to the New York Times.
“I should have stayed with God,” Dahmer said. “I tried and I failed, and created a holocaust.”
