Michiko on episode 1: Big Egos
I will prove myself as a “combo.” I had always wanted to work in the beauty and fashion industry, but it took me a few years to really figure it out. I ended up going to Japan to teach English, and it was there that I was really exposed to the industry. I had friends working as hair stylists, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists and designers...a friend in Tokyo encouraged me to go to hair school. I ended up going to LA to study makeup, and then when I came to NY, I enrolled in beauty school. My personality and endless energy make me unique. I love what I do and love to work. You will see my journey in joining the B. Lynn Group, and along the way will be the good, the bad and the ugly!
Originally when I met with B. Lynn Group, Brandi was looking for a makeup artist to add to the B. Lynn roster. I started out as a makeup artist but then wanted to do hair and for the past few years I have been concentrating on hair. So when I met with Brandi, I didn't want to get cornered into only doing makeup, as I love doing hair and have been concentrating on hair for the past few years! So as to not limit myself, I wanted to continue to do both with the B. Lynn group. I get hired to do makeup, I get hired to do hair...and I also get hired to do both, so why limit myself? If Brandi wants to send me on makeup jobs, hair jobs or both, then I'm happy to do so. I'm happy as long as I'm keeping busy and working.
I think that in saying that a “combo is scary,” Crystal is giving the reaction of many industry people who think that because you do BOTH hair and makeup, you may be not be good at either one. For example, there’s the saying, "jack of all trades but master in none." I will be the first one to say that doing both makeup and hair is not easy and can be stressful, especially when u are responsible for both on a job and you always want to do your best for that job. But...it is also the greatest being in control of both. And I know plenty of hair/makeup artists who do both and are amazing artists at both. If you really love what you do and work hard, then anything is possible. As far as I am concerned, if I had to choose and pick one over the other, then I would definitely choose to do hair...but Brandi believes in my makeup and wants me to do makeup so why not just stick to doing both?
I will prove myself as a “combo” by just doing what I do and getting hired doing makeup, hair, or both. And every time I work, I will give it 200%. And I'm always looking to add to my book so I'm happy to test more and add great images and editorials to my book, in hair, makeup and both.
