The best moments of the MTV Video Music Awards - as we all know - aren't from what happens onstage, but the random celebrity interactions seen in the audience. So, how exactly did Rihanna and Katy Perry end up next to each other or why is Taylor Swift's squad so deep? With the 2016 show just around the corner, an MTV insider reveals the truth behind VMAs seating.
Gina Esposito, Vice President for MTV music and talent, tells Cosmo that the seating chart takes months to figure out and changes constantly. It all begins with celebrities literally telling the network who they want to sit by. Esposito says celebs send these requests along with their RSVPs and MTV tries to accommodate.
As for the most popular artist of all? It's Taylor Swift. "She has so many good friends, and it was hard to figure out the 'Taylor' of it all [in past years]," Esposito says, "because so many people were requesting to sit by her and sit with her. She's often really requested." It's not easy being the queen bee of the squad.
The television crew also plays a big role in seating. They want to make sure the angles and reactions are perfect. Remember Jay Z and Kanye reacting to Beyonce's pregnancy reveal? Those are the iconic moments MTV wants to continue to create.
Many think that certain seats are advantageous (e.g. sitting by an aisle means you'll definitely win an award), but Esposito clears up that rumor. Just because you're sitting at the aisle does not mean you're winning!
