'Moana' Trailer Debuts Disney's First Polynesian Princess

"We learned what a source of pride it was for [the people of the Pacific Islands], that they were the world’s first great navigators ... We wanted to celebrate that.”

The newest Disney trailer for the upcoming movie Moana is a victory for diversity. Starring newcomer Auli'i Cravalho and imminently perfect human Dwayne The Rock Johnson (as a demi-god, duh) and featuring tracks by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, the new animated film is already being hailed as a gorgeous visual treat.

Moana tells the story of the eponymous heroine's journey to finish her ancestor's quest and discover her roots. Doesn't look like this girl needs a man to save her!

“The whole idea of voyaging wasn’t in our initial story,” John Musker, one of the film's head animators, told MTV News last year. “And then we learned what a source of pride it was for [the people of the Pacific Islands], that they were the world’s first great navigators, using dead reckoning to find their way across the ocean. We wanted to celebrate that.”

Moana will premiere in theaters this Thanksgiving, on November 23, 2016.
